Tour Overview
Tarangire National Park is northern Tanzania’s elephant stronghold, home to one of East Africa’s largest elephant populations, with herds of up to 300 moving through golden grasslands studded with ancient baobab trees. Covering 2,850 km², the park follows the Tarangire River, the region’s only permanent water source during the dry season, which draws extraordinary wildlife concentrations between June and October. Beyond elephants, you’ll find tree-climbing lions, over 550 bird species, and a landscape architecture unlike anywhere else in Tanzania — flat-topped acacias against giant, swollen baobab silhouettes.
Highlights & Experiences
Game Drives
The core activity: extended 4x4 safari drives along the river floodplain and through baobab woodland. Morning drives (cooler temperatures, peak animal activity) typically yield elephant herds at the riverbank, while afternoon drives explore the swamp areas where giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest gather. Your guide tracks predator movement via radio network with other vehicles. Duration: 3-4 hours per session.
Elephant Herd Viewing
Tarangire's signature experience. Herds gather at the river to drink, bathe, and socialize — calves included, often within close, respectful viewing distance from the vehicle. Dry season (June-October) concentrates hundreds of elephants along a few key water points, creating sightings unmatched elsewhere in Tanzania's northern circuit.
Bird Watching
Tarangire hosts over 550 recorded species, including yellow-collared lovebirds, kori bustards, and the elusive ashy starling, found almost nowhere else outside this ecosystem. The swamp areas in the park's south are particularly rich for waterbirds and migratory species (November-April).
Picnic Lunch in the Bush
A designated picnic site within the park (typically near the river or a scenic overlook) offers a midday break with views over the landscape, a chance to absorb the surroundings at a slower pace between drive sessions.
