Tour Overview
Discover Lake Chala, a mesmerizing crater lake that straddles the Tanzania-Kenya border on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Formed approximately 250,000 years ago, this ancient caldera offers crystal-clear waters that shift from deep blue to turquoise to emerald green depending on the season and sunlight. Just 55 kilometers from Moshi—about an hour’s scenic drive—Lake Chala remains one of the region’s most unexplored and breathtaking natural attractions.
Key Highlights & Experiences
Canoeing on Tranquil Waters
Dive into the inviting waters and experience visibility like never before. The depth ranges from shallow edges perfect for wading to deep central areas ideal for diving and swimming. Snorkel to observe the fascinating underwater landscape of twisted roots, rocks, and crystal-clear depths. Try the rope swing for an exhilarating plunge, or simply float peacefully while gazing up at the canopy above.
Hiking & Nature Exploration
Beyond the crater rim walk, explore the diverse landscapes surrounding Lake Chala. From lush lakeshore forest to stunning volcanic savannah, from river beds marvelously carved through ancient rock to thick bush or open 'mbuga', walking at Lake Chala is a magical experience that puts you back in touch with nature. Don't miss the seasonal riverbed tour, where water has eroded walls into beautiful natural sculptures.
